11. IMPORTANT WARNINGS FOR THE USE OF THE PRODUCT

11.1 Any element applied on the roof of the vehicle alters its standard driving conditions; therefore, it is necessary to lower the driving speed accordingly.
11.2 It is also necessary to consider the quality of roadbed, traffic, environmental and weather conditions.
11.3 Autohome shell roof tents are handicraft products manufactured through accurate manual techniques; therefore, it is possible to have weight variations, in the range of 10 %. When calculating the carriable load it is recommended to take this factor into consideration, as well as the weight of the used roof racks and possible objects stored inside the tent (ladders, additional accessories and/or personal belongings) Do not exceed maximum load allowed on the roof by the vehicle’s manufacturer.
11.4 Close the tent perfectly and always check the load fixing before leaving.
11.5 The same operation shall be carried out also during breaks in the trip.
11.6 We suggest to pay the utmost attention in case of transport of a supplementary luggage in tents models where it is acceptable; it is necessary to consider the maximum load allowed on the vehicle, on roof-racks and the total transported load.
Pay attention not to exceed the maximum load allowed for transport stated on the vehicle’s registration document.
The maximum load specified in the assembly instruction is not to be exceeded.
We also suggest to read carefully the technical instructions on this topic or to ask for detailed information by e-mail to: [email protected] manufacturer declines any responsibility for any accident due to improper use, wrong maintenance or for the non-respect of general rules concerning the use of the tent enclosed with the product.

We also recommend:

11.7 Not to leave children unattended in tents.
11.8 To pay attention to the maximum height allowed in subways, covered parkings and to any of the following obstacles: barriers, street signals and advertising posters, prominent rocks, trees etc..
11.9 To make sure that the car + tent washing is allowed in case of car + tent washing in automatic car washes with rolls.
11.10 Not to transport inflammable or dangerous objects inside the tent.
11.11 To avoid parking or camping in areas at high environmental risk or during extraordinary weather conditions (typhoons, hurricane, overflows, floods, landslides, etc.).
11.12 To pay the utmost attention during off-road trips and extreme raids.

12. GENERAL ADVICE ON USE
Please read carefully the specific instructions and the General rules for use and maintenance, which are an integral part of the products. Here are some common warnings:

12.1 High-strength mosquito-nets must be used with due caution: do not pull them with too much strength or hit them. Strong pressure may cause them to tear or split. Since such breakages are due to incorrect handling, they are not covered by the warranty.
The manufacturer is not liable in case of breakage of mosquito nets.
12.2 It is advisable to treat the zips with lubricating sprays, soap or various waxes to ensure that they work properly. Before using the zips or the Velcro straps, it is recommended to remove sand, mud or other deposits, if present.
The Manufacturer is not liable in case of zips breakage.
12.3 Treat carefully and do not pull the window-opening cords in the provided models, and in general the elastic bands.
The manufacturer is not liable for broken cords or elastic bands.
12.4 In the event of strong wind, close the awnings and changing cabins and any other accessory that could produce a sailing effect. In the event of heavy rain, remove any water pockets on the roof. The weight of these water pockets could bend or damage the support poles. Even verandas, although they have a sturdy independent pole, are still temporary structures that cannot withstand extraordinary weather events. It is therefore recommended to fold up or not to use such accessories if unfavourable environmental conditions are expected.
The manufacturer is not liable for breakages.
12.5 Check and remove excessive quantities of snow, ice or water, any animal excrements and vegetal resins from the roof tents (be careful when cleaning).
12.6 When closing or opening the roof tents, make sure that that there are no travel materials (pillows, blankets, sleeping bags) or personal belongings that prevent them from closing or opening.
The manufacturer is not liable for deformed shells.
12.7 In the Maggiolina and Columbus models, the tightening of the hooks (external metal fasteners) is adjustable; it is recommended not to over-tighten them.
12.8 Avoid driving with opened tents.
12.9 Always open the shell closing hooks (in the equipped models) before using the handle; without handles shells do not open or close.
12.10 In tents models with gas springs close the tent making sure the tension rod is perfectly perpendicular: the string shall be pulled downwards in a straight way (do not pull or lead the string in a lateral or oblique direction), because an abnormal deformation of the upper structure could cause a breakage of the silver profile in the front part of the shell.
12.11 In the models made of fabric, to obtain the best insulation level and prevent any water or sand infiltration, it is necessary for the pvc cover-elastic to be well-tightened: adjust the elastic’s length and check for the Pvc covering to be perfectly adherent to the base of the tent.
12.12 In the Overzone series, before closing the tent, it is necessary to unlock the projecting tent’s extension structure loosening the internal locks. If this operation is not carried out, the fabric around the knobs could tear (see in detail the instructions given with the product).

13. GLASS FIBRE SHELLS

Shells have been manufactured using an accurate handicraft technique that offers the best guarantee: a compact and durable quality structure that cannot be compared to common plastic or similar products on the market.

13.1 Also laboratory results have confirmed the great elasticity of the fibre and the extraordinary resilience of gelcoat/colour; however, being the latter a superficial component which is more rigid than fibre, it is necessary not to hit, bend or deform the article. Incorrect actions could cause superficial colour micro-breaks that the Manufacturer will not acknowledge under the Warranty.
13.2 Colour superficial micro-breaks are only an aesthetic factor, they do not reduce the articles functionality, nor cause water or dust infiltration; they can always and easily be repaired, with some painting or car repair works.
13.3 Pay the utmost attention in handling shell tents. It is recommended not to force, deform or bend the upper shell, special attention is required for sides and borders.
13.4 Do not hit the shells in a violent manner. Do not drag shells on the ground without protection.
13.5 Do not transport tents holding the roof border; use the specially provided handles or hollows under the base.
13.6 While closing the tents, as the fabric is bended inside the shells, do not lift or deform the border of the roof: this operation could cause superficial colour micro-breaks.
13.7 While climbing on the ladder, do not cling with all your weight on the border of the roof: such a stress can cause superficial micro-breaks on the shell.
13.8 Position the ladder inside the shells according to the Use and maintenance instructions, which are an integral part of the product. For instance, do not position the ladder onto quilts and blankets which are bulky or thick, as an excessive volume could damage the internal roof or the fibreglass.
13.9 When closing or opening roof tents, make sure there are no travel materials (pillows, blankets, sleeping bags) or personal belongings preventing opening or closing.
13.10 During the tent’s use, even movement of the users can deform the shell and create small superficial cracks in the colour, visible on the outside.
13.11 To close the tents provided with gas springs follow the Use and maintenance instructions; do not act directly on the shell. Excessive stress on the shell in the wrong place or excessive manual bending of the border could cause superficial micro-breaks.
13.12 Micro-breaks are due in most cases to misuse or accidental causes; they are not due to manufacturing defects and are not covered by the Product Warranty in any way.
13.13 During the storage, it is recommended to position the shell roof tent, using a protection in order to avoid any scratch on the fibreglass; use, for example, some cardboard, polystyrene, sponge or fitted carpet. Do not overturn the tent, always position it on its base.

VENTILATED ROOF INSULATION AS YOU WOULD FIND IN THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS ATTICS!

1 The roof insulation of the shell tents consists of a honeycomb panel with free room to expand in case of temperature changes. The roof maintains its characteristics unaltered in a temperature range between -20°C and +50°C
2 The panel may swell to enable an higher air flow inside.
3 There are holes in the panel to allow condensation gases to escape in a natural way, for a fully ventilated roof.
4 Also the 5mm mousse carefully laid out may appears to be detached in some points: this is not a defect but a feature required to achieve the highest possible air circulation. For a healthy exclusive environment that only Autohome can guarantee.

FABRIC FEATURES

Autohome fabrics are produced by leading European Companies. Each fabric is manufactured in compliance with high quality standards and it distinguishes itself for the fabric features.
In case of rain, the minimum water column value is equal to 250 mm (for vertical fabrics) and 600 mm (for the roof): these values are the result of tests carried out according to the UNI EN 20811 norm.
Watertight can be achieved by using the Winter hood (optional); notwithstanding this hood limits the condensation and the breathability of the fabric, it allows the tent to be insulated against cold.
If the outside temperature is below 10°, it is advised to use the Winter Hood as it will prevent high humidity to originate inside the tent. This will allow the inner tent to remain drier and more insulated. We advise to provide for a good air circulation by using the tent openings.
All the fabrics, in particular the Over/Land-Camp-Zone fabric, reach the stated water column value after some exposures to rain.

When the tent is new, the fabric fibres are very dry and do not expand; therefore, both the fabric and the seams do not allow the necessary water repellence to be achieved. Therefore, in case of new tents, it is advisable to dampen the fabric (in the garden, for instance) and to dry it before using the tent.
The more the fabric gets wet and is exposed to water and humidity, the better becomes its breathability; the dew at night, the environmental humidity and the dust particles as well let the textile fibres expand and the seam holes get clogged.
The condensation is technically an unavoidable phenomenon which is hindered by the high speed of water vapor transferred to the external fabric.
In case of high temperature difference, it is possible to stop the generation of the natural condensation in the tent, by using the tent openings. We advise not to use any artificial instruments such as fans, battery operated vacuum cleaners or any other commercial appliances.

WHAT DOES WATER COLUMN MEAN?

A water column indicates the pressure in millimetres that can weigh on the fabric before it allows water to seep through. The value is used as an indication of the resistance to water seepage of tents, cloths, items, etc. The higher the water column value is, the better will be the fabric watertightness.
Anyway, too high waterproofing values also mean lower breathability. Water does not seep through PVC or nylon tents, but when people move inside or after some hours sleep, they start sweating and end being in a sweat. This becomes even worse if the outside air temperature is low.
For example, imagine you sleep or stay in a lorry body equipped with tarpaulin: even if there are air intakes or other openings, you cannot breathe deeply, nor live in a fresh, healthy environment. The water vapour and the body heat transfer speed are very important factors, which should not be forgotten.
To sum up, a highly water-resistant fabric having high water column values and low water vapour transfer values can be used for lorry tarpaulins, tent floors, roof tents, rucksack & wheel covers or applications where the breathability factor is not relevant.

14. CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Fabrics cleaning shall be carried out by utilising non-aggressive products (use soft sponges and anyway do not exceed in fabric rubbing). For example, liquid Marseille soap diluted in abundant water can be considered a particularly suitable agent.
To keep the fabric in perfect conditions, it must be cleaned regularly. If dirt remains on the fabric for a long period, it could be absorbed by the fabric and damage it forever. Always take care of the fabric while cleaning.
Regular cleaning and regular application of a protective layer with a silicone spray product is essential to keep the aluminium closures in perfect conditions. Do not leave closures dirty for a long time, in order to avoid seizures and deterioration of its parts.
In case of sand (especially Australian sand, being almost as fine as talcum powder), make sure it does not damage the fabric. In such a case, it is advisable to suck mechanically the sand before utilizing water or neutral solutions.

The seams on the roof of the bigger verandas, i.e. Overland Large and all Overcamp verandas, shall absolutely be treated with liquid paraffin or waterproofing quality sprayers. Only in this way, the fabric can show resistance to extremely adverse weather conditions. If you need information on the specific products, please do not hesitate to contact your trusted dealer.
For polyester/ glass fibre cleaning use medium alkaline and water-based professional detergents, try to avoid using very aggressive products.
Care should also be taken if solvent-based products are to be used, as the fibreglass may be attacked.
Any possible scratch, opaqueness or other elements concerning polyester and glass fibres can be removed by simple bodywork fixing and polishing (treat the surface where necessary with water and fine grain abrasive paper or polishing paste).

To keep the shells brightness, it is advisable to apply a protective wax twice a season (the same wax you use for your car). Otherwise, a general colour dullness could occur and in such a case you need to polish by using car repairer’s products. As to shells, in comparison with green, dark grey and black, the white colour has a remarkably higher resistance to sun rays and any other environmental factors.

14.1 Before storing the tent in winter, we suggest to remove the mattress with pillows and to grease all metallic parts with a light oil film. Do the same on all bolts, nuts and elements for tents opening, as well as on the shell’s external hooks, that shall be regularly greased.
14.2 As for their storage, they can be stored vertically (on their wide side) or horizontally (with the base of the tent on the ground); in the latter case, do not put loads on the shells.
14.3 Before removing the tent from the vehicle, we recommend to always unhook it from the roof-rack bars to make disassembling easier.
14.4 Avoid removing the tent together with roof-rack bars to prevent any scratch on the vehicle’s bodywork.
14.5 Store the tent in a dry place.
