Hard Shell vs Soft Shell - Autohome Official
Home » Hard Shell vs Soft Shell

IT’S NOT ABOUT LOOKS.

IN EUROPE, NOT ALL ROOF TENTS ARE CREATED EQUAL.

Parking vs. Camping: the difference is in the configuration.

A HARD-SHELL TENT ISN’T A BOX. IT’S A REAL ROOF.

Fiberglass construction, authentic insulation, built to last.

SINCE 1958. A CLAIM FEW CAN MAKE

The original rooftop tent—still the industry benchmark.

parking and camping in Europe

HARD SHELL VS SOFT TENT
PARKING VS CAMPING

The Real Difference: Stopover or Camping Trip.
In Europe, the choice between a hard-shell tent and a fabric expandable tent completely changes the travel experience.

small medium large

Hard-shell tents, when open, remain within the vehicle’s shape and allow for sleeping during a regular stopover, without camping, and in compliance with European regulations.

On the other hand, fabric foldable or expandable tents extend beyond the vehicle's shape, occupy space beyond the vehicle, and are designed for use in camping or authorized areas.
They are typical of overlanding, ideal for wild camping in non-European territories where it is allowed.

WITHIN VEHICLE SHAPE = PARKING
BEYOND VEHICLE SHAPE = CAMPING

Discover the main differences between the two travel styles.

1. USAGE
HARD SHELL

SOFT TENT

Usable anywhere during stopovers (parking)

Intended for camping

Open: always within vehicle shape

Open: outside vehicle shape

No constraints, no limitations

Requires dedicated space

2. OPENING / PRACTICALITY
HARD SHELL

SOFT TENT

Immediate opening (about 30 sec.)

Slower opening

Bed always ready

Bed needs to be prepared

3. ROAD / AERODYNAMICS
HARD SHELL

SOFT TENT

Optimized aerodynamic profile

Greater resistance and aerodynamic impact

Lower consumption

Higher consumption

Better suited for cruising speeds

Better suited for off-road use and lower speeds

4. PROTECTION / STRUCTURE
HARD SHELL

SOFT TENT

Rigid fiberglass shell. Not ABS.

Textile structure

High resistance to wind and weather

Lower protection

Rigid roof, insulated with fiberglass

Reduced insulation

5. COMFORT
HARD SHELL

SOFT TENT

Stable mattress, higher height

Foldable mattress, lower height

Superior sleep quality

More basic comfort

Greater stability during sleep

Structure more prone to movement

6. TRAVEL / DESTINATION
HARD SHELL

SOFT TENT

Suitable for all climates

Mild climates

Perfect for continuous traveling

More suited for camping

Ideal for North and South of the world

Better for hot climates

7. TRANSPORT / EXTRAS
HARD SHELL

SOFT TENT

Built-in cargo capacity in shells

Not available

More practical for taller vehicles

Less practical

8. PRICE
HARD SHELL

SOFT TENT

Higher investment

More economical

Two different philosophies.
A clear choice: freedom of travel or traditional camping in compliance with European rules.
